Act 2 Scene 4 - Ancients Shelter Ten by Gama Master (GM)
-----------------------------------------------------------
The door to shelter "ten" as the group had begun calling it opens with the card.

It is a brightly lit with blue lighting staircase. Xavier stealthily leads the way down a long staircase (maybe 100 feet, hard to say) as the group descends, after about 40 feet down there is a "swish" sound as the door above shuts, the lights go out.

It is pitch black. There are no sounds.

OOC - I also need a marching order just so I know who was where, I know Xavier led but I am not sure the rest of it.

Re: Act 2 Scene 4 - Ancients Shelter Ten by Pierce
-----------------------------------------------------------
When the lights went out, Pierce whispered "Hang on a minute and I'll get a lantern ready."

He opened his pack and pulled out the lantern. Once it was ready, he focused on the wick and after a short time it lit itself.

As for marching order, I believe that X went in first  and Redmond went second. I would think that Phebe would do best in the middle. That would put me at the end. OK with everyone?

===========================================================
Re: Act 2 Scene 4 - Ancients Shelter Ten by Gama Master (GM)
-----------------------------------------------------------
The stairs were a lot creepier looking in the dim light from the old lantern. But the way below was at least visible now.

===========================================================
Re: Act 2 Scene 4 - Ancients Shelter Ten by Phebe Irpeel
-----------------------------------------------------------
While she waited for the lantern to be lit, Phebe kept her hand on the handrail going down, closed her eyes, and bowed her head in silent prayer...

In response to Pierce's suggestion, she nods quietly.

Re: Act 2 Scene 4 - Ancients Shelter Ten by Xavier Ashe

His rapier raised cautiously, X slowly begins to lead them deeper.

===========================================================
Re: Act 2 Scene 4 - Ancients Shelter Ten by Gama Master (GM)
-----------------------------------------------------------
At the bottom of the stairs is a doorway in the right wall. There is an access panel similar to the one on the outside beside this door. The door is shut, it looks like the same kind of door as on the outside.

===========================================================
Re: Act 2 Scene 4 - Ancients Shelter Ten by Phebe Irpeel
-----------------------------------------------------------
Phebe gently shushes the others, and quietly moves over to stand outside the door.

She softly puts one hand upon the door, and the other hand upon the access panel.

Then she closes her eyes, and silently prays...

===========================================================
Re: Act 2 Scene 4 - Ancients Shelter Ten by Phebe Irpeel
-----------------------------------------------------------
After several moments, Phebe quietly steps away from the door, and silently motions the others back a bit.

Then she goes around to each of the others, and very quietly whispers in their ears:

"I prayed for wisdom and insight... and received a sensation of being shot at by some kind of lightning throwing weapon."

"I believe that we must be prepared for such an attack when we open that door."

===========================================================
Re: Act 2 Scene 4 - Ancients Shelter Ten by Redmond Jacoby
-----------------------------------------------------------
"Ah." Redmond considers that a moment. "So, we duck before opening it?"

===========================================================
Re: Act 2 Scene 4 - Ancients Shelter Ten by Xavier Ashe
-----------------------------------------------------------
"Sounds like it's trapped.  We could open it while standing to the side maybe."

===========================================================
Re: Act 2 Scene 4 - Ancients Shelter Ten by Pierce
-----------------------------------------------------------
Pierce smiled appreciatively at Phebe's ability; who knew how they would have figured out what was going on here without her. He nodded at X's suggestion and got the card ready. Holding both card and lantern he might not be able to use weapons, but he had other ways to attack if things came down to it. He whispered quietly before inserting the card, "I'd guess that someone knows we're here. That's why the light went out. Does anyone have a mirror?"

Re: Act 2 Scene 4 - Ancients Shelter Ten by Xavier Ashe

"I have quite an uncanny dodge, which may come in handy, but no mirror.  Don't want to see my scar anymore than I have to."

Pierce nodded and waited until everyone was ready before sticking the card in the door.

The lights are still out... the door hasn't opened.

Re: Act 2 Scene 4 - Ancients Shelter Ten by Pierce

Does it look like there is a place to put your hand or push buttons while the card is inserted?

===========================================================
Re: Act 2 Scene 4 - Ancients Shelter Ten by Gama Master (GM)
-----------------------------------------------------------
All that's there is a screen and a card slot, but Pierce noticed earlier that when Xavier was messing with the doors that touching the screen itself did things.

===========================================================
Re: Act 2 Scene 4 - Ancients Shelter Ten by Pierce
-----------------------------------------------------------
Pierce will insert the card and push on the screen. If (when) the door opens, he'll jump aside just in case.

===========================================================
Re: Act 2 Scene 4 - Ancients Shelter Ten by Redmond Jacoby
-----------------------------------------------------------
Redmond, pressed back against the wall, frowns. "Need someone to try knocking it down, Pierce?"

===========================================================
Re: Act 2 Scene 4 - Ancients Shelter Ten by Gama Master (GM)
-----------------------------------------------------------
THe screen beeps a few times but then Pierce must have guessed the right thing because the lights suddenly went on and the door suddenly came open. A man in orange jumpsuit was lying down about 20 meters away from the doorway with some kind of weapon aimed at the door. As soon as the door open a blast of electrical energy leaps from the barrel of the weapon and heads in your direction. Pierce just manages to jump to the side of the doorway before the bolt hits him. The bolt hits the wall and crackles but makes no other sound.

"Leave me be, or I'll blast you all to hell!" yelled the man.

===========================================================
Re: Act 2 Scene 4 - Ancients Shelter Ten by Pierce
-----------------------------------------------------------
Pierce breathed a sigh of relief for Phebe's gift. If she hadn't warned him, he probably would have been hit by the weapon.

"We don't want any trouble. We saw your flying machine crash and tracked you here.  Maybe we can help each other out. What do you say?"

"Maybe you don't understand," X says.  "We need to talk to you.  It could be mutually beneficial.  And we'd like to do it the easy way.  If not..."  He waves his rapier around to indicate his companions.  "...we do outnumber you.  So what do you say?  Let's all just get along here."

Then he adds, as an afterthought, "We are here on official business, by the way.  We are just following orders."

===========================================================
Re: Act 2 Scene 4 - Ancients Shelter Ten by Gama Master (GM)
-----------------------------------------------------------
OOC - okay he probably can't see you Xavier if you're not in line of sight and if you were he'd shoot you (or at least, has been shooting at anything he can see thus far), so nods won't mean much to him. Pierce, the walls are some kind of concrete or material similar to what the Ancient's Way is made out of (it's actually much stronger than concrete but Pierce probably doesn't know exactly what Duralloy is). The walls are not reflective. If you hold your metal short sword out there where it's visible he could possibly hit it and since metal conducts electricity... free Int check on that one.

Nothing in here is important to me, I'm just in here resting. I just don't want any company, got it? So either say what you came to say and move on or just move on.

OOC - yes, I am assuming everyone is still back out of view.

 Map - i realize this is crude, but..

I = Pierce - standing back away from the door, to avoid getting zapped.

X = Xavier, he is standing just on the other side from Pierce of the now open doorway, keeping his head back so he doesn't get shot.

R = Redmond, he's up on the stairway a bit, well out of danger.

H = Phebe.. she can hear what's happening just fine but she isn't even sure that F is where F is, she just sees the bolts of lightning flashing against the wall when he shoots.

F = shooter. he is prone. he has some kind of lightning-blasting device.

the left side is the stairway, the right side is the room, but you can't see it all so i didn't draw it all...

He whispered to the others, "If we want to question him, we'll have to go in and get him. I personally don't want to charge that gun, so we need  to do something to limit his ability to shoot at us."

Could I start my pyro on a blanket and keep it smouldering and making smoke? Maybe get it to the edge of burning and toss it in the door?

"Get back," X says to the others.  X gets in position and concentrates.  If there is any difficulty, he hopes that his uncanny dodge will help save him.

After X went through the door and the gun discharged, Pierce went through and pulled his sword. He wasn't sure he could target well enough to miss X in hand-to-hand with pyrokinesis. This guy's words and actions spoke volumes. He was probably in some pure strain human clan. . . .

Maybe Phebe could get a reading on him and they could tell for sure. If not, there were less . . . pleasant . . .  ways to get the information.

Pierce typed:Sorry, I figured that Pierce would have held off on it since he didn't know what X was going to do. So he's charging in with his sword out. . . .

I'm trying to determine if you are actually going to attack the man or not, whether it by pyro, a sword, or whatever. You are the first character to react after Xavier's attempt to TELEKINETICALLY grab the gun. The gun went off, no one got hit, it's a new round, you're at the top of the initiative list. The gun is still in the man's hand. Xavier and Redmond haven't moved yet, they're both behind the wall still.

So if you are going to rush in with the sword, you're the first character to move into the room, and I need to know what  you're going to do, you can reach him and attack in one move, if that's your goal. The man doesn't have a held action to shoot you anymore, so you will get to him before he can fire.

I'm sorry the map is so crap, I should have used paint to make better one but I have been pressed for time lately.

Round 1 by Gama Master (GM)
-----------------------------------------------------------
INIT
14 Pierce
06 Redmond
01 Xavier
00 Phebe
00 Shooter

In Round 0 surprise round Xavier tried to grab the gun from Shooter but failed, the gun fired, Shooter didn't get an action, because I'm nice that way.

Round 1 started, Pierce moved into the room drawing his sword as he moved and slashed the still prone man across his back. He drew blood. The man cried out "FARKING MUTIE! I'LL KILL YOU! YOU BASTARD!!!"

Then Redmond moved into the room and tried to grapple the prone man, but he managed to roll out of the way.

Xavier then moved in and stepped on the man while grabbing the weapon and he managed to yank it free of the man's grasp. Xavier now had the thing, whatever it was.

GOD DAMN MUTIE!! I KNEW YOU WERE LYING!!! he screamed.

Phebe moved in and concentrated on the man...
[Private to Phebe Irpeel: telepathy - he is severely pissed, but desperate, he's considering taking out a "grenade" and blowing himself and all of you up with it. He is afraid you will find out something...]

The shooter stood up and reached into his pockets and pulled out a round pear shaped device of some kind, and he held his hand over some kind of trigger on the top of it. As he stood, Pierce slashed him again cutting him deeply, he was in bad shape now. Redmond got in a good punch but he managed to stand anyway.

"ANYONE TOUCHES ME AGAIN AND WE ALL DIE!!! NOW GIVE ME BACK MY GUN AND LEAVE!!!"

His finger was ready to pull the trigger in an instant.

So you had better do the safe thing and get the hell away."

Re: Round 1 by Pierce

Pierce realized that if they left the room that this guy would have no compuction against tossing the grenade after them. He paused and glanced at Phebe, he hoped that she'd been able to get a reading from the guy on whether they'd live if they left him alive in the room.

"How do we know that you won't thorw that grenade after us if we leave the room? It looks like we have a standoff here. I don't know why you're so all fired up against mutants? An attitude like that might burn you if you run into the wrong person. Ya know that?"

He paused briefly and glanced at the others before taking any action.

Re: Round 1 by Phebe Irpeel
-----------------------------------------------------------
Phebe continues to regard the man with her gentle penetrating gaze.

"'Peace be unto you.'  We take no joy in hostilities, but seek only to defend ourselves."

"For there are some things that we are less ignorant of.  Things such as flying machines, and those who fly them.  Things such as bombs dropped on villages, and those who drop them.  Things such as knowledge of our home, and those who possess it with hostile intent."

"I know your thoughts.  You have no hope of concealing them from me.  So you must know that we cannot leave you to go your way, and bring back those who would kill us all.  If it must be so, we would all gladly die here, with you, in order to prevent the deaths of our entire village at the hands of you and yours."

"But it does not have to be so..."

Phebe regards him gently.

"I can tend your wounds, and heal you.  You can return with us, peacefully, and live with us peacefully.  I suspect it is a far more pleasant place to live than the violent place you have come from.  And you, and we, will all be alive to enjoy it together."

"Or, if you must, then blow us all up, for I know where I will go when I die.  Do you?"

"But either way, the knowledge you possess cannot and will not be passed on to others."

"The choice is yours.  Please, give me the grenade now, and I will tend your wounds, and no harm will come to you."

Phebe prays silently as she waits for his reply, and continues to regard him with her gentle penetrating gaze...

"22:41, Today: Phebe Irpeel rolled 31 using 1d20+12. Diplomacy."

Phebe responds gently.

"Why?  Help me understand.  And think about it.  Is death really preferable to you?"

"It doesn't have to be that way.  Yes, we can all die, here and now, together.  Or... we could all live to see another day... together."

"Please... think about it.  The choice is yours."

OOC: Well, Phebe isn't much into combat, so she had to bide her time.  :)

"Ma'am, his type ain't much for live and let live" says a voice coming from the entrance to the bomb shelter. A figure steps forward from the hallway. It is a medium sized mutant humanoid raccoon, standing about four and half feet tall. Four arms sprout from his mid section and the upper pair are holding a pair of cocked revolvers. He holds the revolvers with steady hands as he walks towards the group. They are trained squarely on the man holding the grenade. The raccoon man's eyes look directly at the man as well as he approaches, even though he is talking to group.

"If I reckon right this feller is with the Circle of Eight, ain't that right, scum?" the raccoon man asks. "Only folks around her with technology like that flying machine, I reckon," he continues, a grim looking crossing his face.

"Circle of Eight did in for my town, the town I was sworn to protect. And by the code I follow that means I mean to bring my vengeance back upon 'em tenfold," he continues, his voice growing colder and more venemous by the second. "Now why don't you just put that grenade down 'afore you really make me angry and maybe I'll spare your pathetic life," he spits, now speaking directly to the man with the grenade.

OOC - you can have an action held to swing the sword if he does a specific thing. Right now he has an action held to activate the grenade if anyone attacks him.

Also on the diplomacy - an awesome roll and that definitely improved his disposition, but it's not a superpower, it's a skill, it takes time to work.

X was biting his tongue as Phebe talked.  He was no good at talking and certainly not at diplomacy.  His rapier is held in one hand, the man's strange gun in the other...a perfect match for the skills he has...but he delays.  Then he starts to talk, "This...mutie...has not threatened to kill us.  You threaten to kill us instead of explaining things to us.  You wouldn't even talk to us!  I have half a mind to let him carry you off."  He pauses.  "But...instead I'd like you to talk, convince us by telling us the truth...for once."

Pierce shook his head sadly, and sheathed his sword. "I'm afraid that we can't do that. We can't allow you to leave here with the information that you have. We really don't want to have to kill you; there's been plenty of death and destruction already.

I swear that if you give me the grenade that you will be well treated. You may not be able to leave the valley, but I'm sure that you will find it a peaceful place. Maybe you can find something there that you haven't found elsewhere, peace of mind."

He held his hand out for the grenade.

The man saw that Pierce was being sincere, and he saw no way out of this situation. He looked back to Phebe, who gave him a reassuring nod. Finally he said, "Okay, I will go with you, if you keep that crazy ... that guy over there from killing me. he nodded toward the four armed upright raccoon with the pistols.

He handed the "grenade" over to Pierce and stepped back.

Re: Round 1 by Clint Beastwood

In one fluid motion Clint spins his pistols around the fingers of his upper pair of hands and drops them, crossing his upper pair of arms over his chest. The pistols drop to his lower pair of hands which execute yet another finger spin and then shove the pistol into the holsters hanging around his waist. His lower arms cross over his belly and a wry smile crosses his lips.

"Well heck pardner, I just wanted to have us a nice little talk," he says in an artifically sweet voice. "I be more than happy to oblige keeping you alive so long as that mouth of yours keeps flapping," he continues and smiles again.

Clint pauses for a moment. "Ya know," he continues. "We might want to take him back up outside of this here tunnel. Lord knows what other suprises he's got stored down here," he says, gesturing at the grenade in Pierce's hand.

"By the way I don't think we been properly introduced," Clint drawls, speaking to the group in general. "The name's Clint Beastwood. And I'm a cowboy," he says with no small measure of pride.

I just found this place. I don't have any idea what all is in here, I found that blaster and decided to use it. I don't think you're going to find any more weapons, though, I did check for those.

Rooms 1 - 4 look like sleeping quarters. Beds, and little else. The beds are made.  In Room 4 the bed is not made, and in the bed is a skelleton.

The back room is some kind of storage facility and there is some kind of ancients machine that is humming in the far back end of the room. It is very large. It has a panel on it also. Big pipes come into this machine from the back side of it. There are a bunch of crates in here, closed.

Phebe looks reassuringly at Direk as he passes the grenade, and nods.

"You did the right thing, Direk."

"And well met, Clint Beastwood."

"My name is Phebe, and this is Pierce, and Redmond, and Xavier."

"'Peace be unto you.'"

Phebe observes the others as they start to check out the area, and hastens to take the lead.

"Before we disturb anything, let me first seek the LORD's guidance.  For there may be hidden dangers..."

Phebe bows her head in silent prayer, her hand upon the threshold of each room, before entering.  And again upon the ancient machine, and upon each crate, before anyone else otherwise interacts with them...

Phebe opens her eyes, regarding the others.

"I do not sense any danger.  But due caution is always advisable..."

She turns to Direk.

"Peace be onto you to, Miss Phebe," Clint replies with a smile. Clint tips his head to Pierce, Xavier and Redmond in turn. "Please to meet y'all. You seem like good folks" he says, with a critical stare, as if this is not a judgement he makes lightly.

"Well, if we're all comfy down here I guess we can stay a spell," Clint says and leans back up against one of the walls of the artifical cave.

"So Direk, let's have it straight. Are you with the Circle of Eight or ain't ya?" Clint asks point blank.

I am a forward aerial scout of the Circle of Eight. When I don't come back, they will send men on horses to try and find me.

===========================================================
Re: Not just whistling dixie by Pierce
-----------------------------------------------------------
Pierce nodded; that made sense. They'd use the aircraft to scout; they'd be a lot harder to take down. If one of them didn't come back, then that would be an area of interest.

"Pleasure Clint. I'm sure that Sarge will want to talk to you about what the circle of eight did. Maybe we can keep it from happening here.

So how long before they consider you overdue?

X, I have to return the card to the others. I should probably let them know that some unpleasant company is going to be coming in a while. Maybe they'd be better off in town until they're fit to move.

Phebe, do you think that the girl is strong enough to move to town?"

He got a thoughtful look in his eye.

"They're gonna be looking for the wreck and a body. Maybe the skeleton here will do for a body. We've got that medallion that Direk left in the wreckage. Maybe we can move enough of the wreckage away from the valley and make it look like he crashed near here. What do you think?"

===========================================================
Re: Not just whistling dixie by Direk ()
-----------------------------------------------------------
I should already have been back yesterday. They've already dispatched a search team by now.

I don't think the circle will find these shelters. Too far off the path. Not unless they send another flyer, which is doubtful. The only reason I knew about them is that I flew over them yesterday.

You got my medallion? I guess I don't need it now. I thought it was lost in the crash.

[Private to Phebe Irpeel: Moving the girl could be very dangerous and undo the help you've done to her already. She needs bedrest for a good week or more.]

Re: Not just whistling dixie by Clint Beastwood
-----------------------------------------------------------
"This is bad news..." Clint says, staring at the floor and looking forlorn. "Bad news..." he repeats to himself softly, momentarily lost in reverie.

He snaps out of it in an instant, and a fire burns bright in his eyes again as he begins to talk rapidly.

"Direk, I appreciate you being fortcoming about these details. Right now you're on my good side and the more you talk the more I'm inclined to let you live. Heck, right now I'm feeling positively magnanimous. Now tell me, how far away is your nearest encampment? How far out would these riders be and which direction would they be coming from? And did you know about this village here before you started scouting this area? Or did you come across it by chance on a random scouting mission?"

===========================================================
Re: Not just whistling dixie by Direk ()
-----------------------------------------------------------
The nearest Circle camp is on the eastern side of Dalz, maybe a sixty or seventy kilometers north and east of here. They would come from there so from the north.

I didn't know about any villages, I was scouting the ancient's road and came across the crater and decided to check it out. Something messed up my fuel line somehow or something, I ran out of fuel while over the valley and I'd had plenty to make it back to camp.

The scouting mission wasn't random, we are given a specific path to scout, so they would know that I was flying along this road. The General in charge of the Dalz camp has access to ancient maps that give him good info about an area before we even scout it.

Re: Not just whistling dixie by Redmond Jacoby

"Lovely." Redmond leans against the wall, brow furrowed with thought. "And what are the chances they're going to try and burn our town when they come across it?"

===========================================================
Re: Not just whistling dixie by Direk ()
-----------------------------------------------------------
That depends on how much resistance is given to being taken over and brought under Circle of Eight rule. But your village, when they find it, will not be the first village they have to take. There are a few between here and Dalz they would occupy first.

===========================================================
Re: Not just whistling dixie by Pierce
-----------------------------------------------------------
Pierce nodded. "Then I guess it's imperative that we get you back to sarge and see about talking to these other towns. We can finish searching here and return the card I borrowed.

That sound good to you guys?"

He looked at the others.

Re: Not just whistling dixie by Clint Beastwood
-----------------------------------------------------------
While Direk spoke this last sentence Clint's cool facade began to crumple. His hands balled in to fists and his face became a mask of hatred and anger. He stood there glaring at Direk for a long, hard moment.

In an instant his guns are out of his holsters and into his upper pair of hands. Seemingly from nowhere his lower pair have produced a gleaming sharp set of knives.

"Resistance? Resistance!? Do you call helpless women and children running in fear resistance? Is that why you had to put them down, to shackle them, to enslave innocent women and children!?" his voice is shaking and his hands are barely holding steady. A look of pain and anguish crosses his face as his trigger fingers tense and squeeze ever so slightly. "I ought to kill you were you stand you murderous good for nothing!" he yells out as his eyes widen and for a moment it looks like he's really going to do it.

But then as quickly as the rage filled him it passed out of him. His body slumped like a thing deflated. He holstered the guns, this time with no fancy finger work, and slid the knives back into the sheaths.

"But I can't..." he says quietly to himself. "It's not the Cowboy way. You don't shoot an unarmed man, even one as low as this one... Become no better than them... Gotta walk the line..." he continues on, almost mumbling to himself.

He turns and begins to walk back up the stairs leading up to the world outside.

Re: Not just whistling dixie by Clint Beastwood

Clint freezes stock still as Direk speaks. A long, tense moment passes during which Clint remain entirely motionless. And then quick as a flash he sprints across the room and slugs Direk squarely in the face with one of his furry paws.

"I said I wasn't gonna shoot ya but I never said I wasn't gonna hit ya. So you just shut yer darn mouth if you know what's good for ya," Clint spits angrily, venom in his voice.

OOC:
I'm hitting him for dramatic effect rather than damage. But I rolled anyways in case you want to actually execute it via game dynamics:

Re: Not just whistling dixie by Xavier Ashe
-----------------------------------------------------------
X has remained silent throughout, but he smiles at Clint's outburst and his hitting of Direk.  "You and I, we're going to get along just fine," he says to Clint.

Then he holds out the pistol taken off Direk to Clint.  "You want his lightning weapon?  I don't need it."

X, having come to trust Phebe's judgment, will rely on her to decide their next course of action.  To the other suggestion, he says, "Not sure if we should head back home just yet, not if there's business to take care of and others like us to save.  But I'll trust your judgment on that one and head back to Sarge if you think that's best."

===========================================================
Re: Not just whistling dixie by Pierce

Pierce nodded. "I know. But do we really want to take Direk out to these towns with us? He might take the opportunity to cause trouble."

===========================================================
Re: Not just whistling dixie by Direk ()
-----------------------------------------------------------
Direk rubs his face where Clint had smacked him, but he says nothing in return.

After Pierce mentions the other towns Direk speaks, "You can't help them. The Circle will eventually run this entire continent, it's only a matter of time. Nothing can stop them. And then you mutie freaks will all be put where you belong, as slaves to your human masters. Humanity will dominate the earth again, forever!"

===========================================================
Re: Not just whistling dixie by Clint Beastwood
-----------------------------------------------------------
"Will somebody else hit him this time? My paw is sore" Clint jokes, clearly tiring of Direk's ranting.

"Sounds like this Sarge is in charge in your village. Is he a Cowboy? It seems right to bring this scum bag to whoevers in charge," Clint continues.

In response to Pierce's comment he adds "I don't think we were planning on trotting Direk here to any of the other towns, although I can't imagine it would be do any harm. I imagine we'll be keeping him in lock up at your village once we're done interrogatin' him"

===========================================================
Re: Not just whistling dixie by Phebe Irpeel
-----------------------------------------------------------
Phebe quietly watches these exchanges, listening to the various questions with a sombre and thoughtful expression.

For in her travels, she has heard of the Circle of Eight.

She looks a bit older and careworn as she ponders these tidings, though still with her usual calm.

Finally, she stirs, offering her counsel.

"It would be very dangerous to move the girl.  She needs bed rest for a good week or more."

"I believe that it would be wisest to return home immediately."

"It is most vital that we deliver Direk into their safekeeping, for if we tarry elsewhere and he escapes us, his knowledge could bring death to us all."

"And if we tarry elsewhere while leaving the wreckage for others to find, the consequences could be grave."

"By returning immediately, the others could be alerted to the danger, and take counsel, doing whatever can be done to help protect us from this threat."

"And once we have updated them, we can think about heading for the other towns, with regular trips back to see my patient, perhaps while others see to the wreckage."

"For the lives of everyone in Cedar Valley are at stake here.  They are entitled to know immediately.  I believe that we dare not risk any delay."

The devout healer then looks at the blaster with some distaste, then to Clint, and to X.

"And if you all would hear my voice, then I would ask that I, of all people, hold that... device... in safekeeping."

"For I am not only pledged to heal rather than kill, but I have given my assurance to Direk to see him safely to Cedar Valley."

"But I am well aware that he may be... provocative... at times.  So it may be better that such a destructive device not be within temptingly easy reach if he provokes a killing rage."

"Perhaps the time may come when using such a device is needful, if there are unforeseen dangers upon the trail.  But if such a thing must be done, I would rather it be upon my own head, rather than any of yours..."

Re: Not just whistling dixie by Clint Beastwood
-----------------------------------------------------------
Clint nods respectfully at Phebe's words.

When she speaks about Clint's outburst and cautions against him holding the weapon, he hangs his head in shame.

"Wise counsel Ma'am, on all counts. And I can't argue that I earned that rebuke. I let my anger get the best of me and I shouldn't oughta cause that ain't the Cowboy way. And it ain't no excuse...but the things these people done to my village, the things they done to those I loved, to the people I swore to protect..." he trails off for a moment, his voice filled with sorrow and remorse.

He takes a moment to gather himself and then continues.

"They're monsters ma'am, and that's the plain truth. But I swore an oath to live by the Cowboy code, and I'll die before I break that oath. And a Cowboy doesn't fire on a defenseless man. So you carry that weapon if you like, but I'd sooner use it against myself than I would an unarmed man. Even one as evil and monstrous as this vile excuse for a man is" he spits, glaring at Direk.

"And I do apoligize for the outburst Ma'am, it weren't right to lose my temper like I did. But I hope you never have to find out how well you can control your temper after everyone you know and loved has been either killed or made a slave to a bunch of monsters like this," he says, looking Phebe directly in the eye with a look filled with sorrow and anguish.

Re: Not just whistling dixie by Phebe Irpeel

Phebe gently returns Clint's gaze, and speaks softly.

"Peace, friend Clint.  Apart from the LORD God Almighty, through the Redeemer Christ Jesus, no one has the power to control what evils lie within, and find peace.  And the path of peace is not always an easy one."

"I share your pain.  And I thank you for your kind hope... but I'm afraid that it comes years too late.  For I myself have sipped from that cup.  And I grieve with thee."

And as he looks into her eyes, he indeed can see a look of shared pain, not of sympathy, but of empathy... and of shared experience.

Re: Not just whistling dixie by Pierce

Pierce shook his head sadly at Direk before he spoke. "Those were my thoughts exactly Phebe. I guess we'll do a quick search here to see what we can find and then we should return the card to the others. We should also let them know of the danger; they should at least be prepared.

As for the Circle of Eight moving out, I wouldn't expect them to be on the move immediately. They'll probably wait for a few days in case pilot error resulted in the downing of the aircraft and wait for a report. They probably aren't ready to mobilize a full detachment on a moment's notice. I'd guess we have a week from when he's overdue before they're ready to move out. That gives us time to inform Sarge and get on the road before they're moving.

We should drop Direk off with Sarge.

Clint, Phebe tends to bring out the best in us. While I may not know a lot about this Lord she talks of, she is wise and I take her advice seriously. And I am very glad for for her presence."
