Act 2 - Scene 2 - A Tangled Web by Gama Master (GM)
-----------------------------------------------------------
You get all geared up and get the fresh new horses. The ride to the forest's edge was uneventful, just a lot of farmland. At the forests edge, you quickly found the path through because Phebe had been through here many times. You had to slow to a brisk walk. About a quarter of a mile into the forest, Redmond's horse, which was in the lead, raised up and halted, and whinnied. It was all Redmond could do to hold on and try not to fall off.

The other horses started acting jittery as well.

Suddenly a strand of sticky, white goop landed on Pierce and jerked back really hard. [OOC - make a strength check DC10 to avoid being pulled off] and that freaked his horse out who tried to buck Pierce off [OOC - make a ride check to stay on, if you made your strength check].

Another strand overshot Xavier but he was not hit by it. One hit Redmond's horse, which scared it and it tried to jump away [OOC - make a ride check to stay in the saddle].

I got a 2! That's good, right?

*sighs* This is going to hurt.))

Re: Act 2 - Scene 2 - A Tangled Web by Pierce
-----------------------------------------------------------
Pierce felt the goop land on his shoulder and reflexively gripped the horse. He even managed to stay in the saddle as the horse started to buck.

He had a good idea who or what was behind this. "It's probably buggems!"

He looked around and tried to see if he could locate his attacker.

X jumps off his horse and hides behind it as a shield while he searches for the source of the attack.  "Something like buggems anyway," he agrees.

Phebe prays silently, keeping her horse behind the menfolk and out of harm's way, and ponders the scene before her with a look of concentration upon her face...

Round 1 by Gama Master (GM)
-----------------------------------------------------------
Init Order
24 Xavier
15 Pierce
11 Baddies
06 Phebe
05 Redmond

OOC - I went ahead and used the dice roller to roll init to save time since I forgot to ask for it earlier. I need actions from Xavier and Pierce, then I will post "Baddies" action, and then I will ask for actions from everyone (including Xavier and Pierce, who will be giving me their Round 2 actions).

Xavier, Pierce, and Phebe see the creature that shot the web at Pierce. It was some type of giant spider-like creature, shooting a web from its abdomen. It was probably about as big as a horse, except more spread out, and shorter. It was crawling around on the branches of a large tree off to the side of the path. Looking for the other creatures, no one managed to spot them. Redmond was too busy rolling and avoiding damage from his fall off the horse to see anything yet.

[Private to Phebe Irpeel: You attempt telepathy on the creature and all you get is a completely alien mindset, completely unreadable.]

Re: Round 1 by Pierce
-----------------------------------------------------------
Pierce hopped off his horse as well; he wasn't ready to try to fight from the back of a bucking horse.

He got his bow ready and took aim at the spiderish thing that shot web at him.

I think I hit (heh!). I'm not sure how much damage the bow does.

X runs up to attack it with his rapier.  "Spit on someone your own size!" he says.

BEGIN OOC

Okay guys, I was on vacation as I had posted in OOC, and am now back (was back yesterday actually but RPOL wasn't), I see that only 2 players have responded to the last combat move. We need to get combat response time to daily or we'll never finish this story. I am going to start just making actions for you guys that haven't responded after 24 hours from a combat move post.

Xavier, maybe I didn't make it clear, but the spider thing that you guys have spotted is in the trees, high above you, not down on the ground. Also you guys know that there are probably more than one of them, because there were several strands of webbing shot at several of you at the same time. You can only spot the one creature so far, however.

When you guys make a roll, please copy and paste it into your message, preferably in orange so I can tell it's OOC, and so I don't have to refer to the dice roller log.

00:04, Thu 15 June: Pierce rolled 23 using 1d20+3. shoot the spider.

Pierce, you rolled a natural 20, and that means that you would get to make a 2nd roll to see if your attack was a critical hit. You just roll your attack roll again, and if it ends up also being a hit, then the attack is considered a critical hit and you'll get to do double the weapon damage.

The bow and arrows you have do 1d6 hp of damage. Go ahead and roll a 2nd to-hit roll and 2 separate damage rolls for me, and that way if it's a critical I will have all the rolls necessary.

Everyone except Pierce and Xavier.. please post!  I will wait until I hear back from Xavier to change his action before making Round 2 post, but at most 24 hours.

END OOC

The spider hisses menacingly at Xavier's threatening words.

Re: Round 1 by Pierce
-----------------------------------------------------------
OK. Here are the rolls you requested. Oh, and I was off by 1 in my pluses to hit the last time. Corrected that with this roll.

23:01, Today: Pierce rolled 4 using 1d6. damage 2.
Today: Pierce rolled 2 using 1d6. damage 1.
23:01, Today: Pierce rolled 23 using 1d20+4. to see if critical

Re: Round 1 by Redmond Jacoby
-----------------------------------------------------------
OOC: I am confuzzled. I thought you said Xavier and Pierce should post, and then you post for the spiders, and then Phoebe and I post with Xavier and Pierce?

===========================================================
Re: Round 1 by Phebe Irpeel
-----------------------------------------------------------
OOC: Yeah, I'm confused too... :p

===========================================================
Re: Round 1 by Gama Master (GM)
-----------------------------------------------------------
OOC - You are correct, my bad! DUH!

Init Order
24 Xavier
15 Pierce
11 Baddies
06 Phebe
05 Redmond

Xavier draws his sword and moves up to the tree where the one visible black spider creature was, and yelled at it, but otherwise didn't know what else to do. Pierce shot his bow at it, however, hitting it squre in its mouth. A black ichor dripped out of the nasty wound, and the creature hissed.

Then the black creature shot a web down at Pierce, and it slattered all over his chest and his bow, rendering his arms very difficult to move. This web-goop was still attached to the spider on the other end, and Pierce was now caught up in it.

Similar events happened to Xavier and Redmond, from other spiders hidden in the trees.

OOC - ok now EVERYONE can post what they do, and also please make spot checks to see the other spiders that just webbed Redmond and Xavier. Keep in mind that if you got webbed (everyone but Phebe) you can't move your arms very well now and have a very sticky webbing goop all over you, and it's still attached to the spider on the other end.

===========================================================
Re: Round 1 by Pierce
-----------------------------------------------------------
Pierce focused his attention on the spider that webbed him. The bow wouldn't be much good to him right now, but it was a good thing he had other means to attack with. In his mind's eye he drew forth the fire within and hurled it at the spider that had him.

He said one word, "Burn!"

Pierce rolled 11 using 2d6+2. Pyro damage (if it hit).
Pierce rolled 13 using 1d20. pyrokinesis.
Pierce rolled 10 using 1d20+7. spot the spider(s).

===========================================================
Re: Round 1 by Redmond Jacoby
-----------------------------------------------------------
((ooc: Apologies for the delay; was a very busy weekend.))

With spiders everywhere, Redmond decides on the straightforwards approach. Grabbing the webbing holding him, he gives it a terrific yank, trying to pull the spider out of the tree to the ground and slam his other arm into it.

OOC: Truth be told, I'm not quite sure what roll this is, so I just rolled a d20 and listed a few possibilities below. ;) Natural 19!

As unarmed attack or grapple check: Hits 23, deals 1d6 + 1d4 + 2 damage.
As Strength check: 21

Spot Check: 9. Hopefully don't need that to see my own spider. ;)

===========================================================
Round 2 by Gama Master (GM)
-----------------------------------------------------------
Init Order
24 Xavier
15 Pierce
11 Baddies
06 Phebe
05 Redmond

End of Round 1

Phebe tries to spot the other spiders, but they are well hidden among the upper branches of the trees.

Redmond tried to yank his webbing to pull the spider, which he still hadn't been able to spot, out of the trees. He pulls hard, and feels him pulling something that resists, but then the webbing goes loose immediately and he falls down on his back. The spider is still not visible.

Then some webbing shoots back down out of the trees at Redmond again, missing him. Xavier gets yanked off his feet and is being dragged across the ground toward a tree.

Round 2

Pierce uses pyrokinesis on the one visible spider, and after it bursts into flames, it shrieks a loud screech.

===========================================================
Re: Round 2 by Redmond Jacoby
-----------------------------------------------------------
Redmond curses under his breath again, rising to his feet and starting towards his friends. He doesn't know where the monsters are, but he can still help out.

((OOC: Should we roll Spot each turn?

If, on my initiative, Xavier hasn't recovered, I'll use my action to pull him free of the webbing. If he recovered on his own, then Redmond will just stand defensively (-4 attack, +2 AC) and try to spot the critters.

Roll for whichever action: natural 5. Bah. That makes 7 for a Strength check and 10 for a Spot. Double bah.))

Re: Round 2 by Phebe Irpeel
-----------------------------------------------------------
OOC: Sorry for the delay; I was sick for a few days...

I didn't get a chance to post my first round action -- would it be OK for me to spend some of that round lighting a torch?  Assuming that is the case...

Phebe successfully lights her torch, and moves forward to burn the strands holding the party member most in need, as high up as possible.

OOC: I didn't get any precog impressions of this attack, I suppose because I was riding in the back of the group.  Do I get any now?

===========================================================
Re: Round 2 by Xavier Ashe
-----------------------------------------------------------
OOC:  Are Xavier's hands now free since he is being dragged?

===========================================================
Re: Round 2 by Gama Master (GM)
-----------------------------------------------------------
Xavier's hands are somewhat covered in webbing but he can still move them. Phebe doesn't get any precog images on the spiders. Everyone can make a spot check every round to see the hidden spiders, that doesn't require making an action. if ALL you do in a round is look for the hidden spiders, you get a +4 bonus to the roll.

I'm assuming that PHebe is trying to burn the webbing that is being used to drag Xavier around, so it works, and he is now just on the ground prone with some webbing still on him but otherwise he can move as normal.

Redmond thinks he has spotted the spider that was dragging Xavier.

The spider that Pierce burned jumps back to another branch and then up into the higher parts of the trees, putting as much distance between it and Pierce as it can. The other spider that webbed Xavier also moves away and flees the general area. You're not sure what the other one did, but it doesn't attack or anything.

===========================================================
Re: Round 2 by Redmond Jacoby
-----------------------------------------------------------
Redmond, not crazy enough to go into the trees, keeps one eye on the spiders he can see, while trying to spot the last missing one. He backs towards Phebe and Xavier. "Don't think they expected us to be able to fight back..."

Spot check: 14.

===========================================================
Re: Round 2 by Xavier Ashe
-----------------------------------------------------------
X picks himself up, says, "Dirty little creatures," and takes a round to look closely in the trees for hidden spiders.

===========================================================
Re: Round 2 by Gama Master (GM)
-----------------------------------------------------------
After a few minutes of searching the trees, you come to the conclusion that they must have "bugged off". Apparently they thought you would be easier prey than you were.

===========================================================
Re: Round 2 by Pierce
-----------------------------------------------------------
Pierce nodded and replied dryly. "Apparently they got a little heartburn. We should tell Sarge about them when we get back."

He also took a little extra time to see if he could spot the repulsive creatures.

===========================================================
Re: Round 2 by Gama Master (GM)
-----------------------------------------------------------
After several minutes, no one has been able to spot any more of the spider creatures. The horses stamp their feet impatiently.

===========================================================
Re: Round 2 by Pierce
-----------------------------------------------------------
After a couple of minutes, Pierce grabs his horse's reins and gets back in the saddle. "Looks like these guys are gone. We'd better head out."

===========================================================
Re: Round 2 by Xavier Ashe
-----------------------------------------------------------
X follows Pierce, still wiping away the sticky stuff.  "Keep your eyes open," he suggests, his sword still ready as he jumps on the back of his horse.

===========================================================
Re: Round 2 by Phebe Irpeel
-----------------------------------------------------------
Phebe nods.

"Thanks be to the LORD for delivering us."

"Perhaps I'll keep this torch lit for a few more minutes, just in case..."

===========================================================
Re: Round 2 by Gama Master (GM)
-----------------------------------------------------------
After about an hour of slow riding along the forest path, you come to what must be The Ancient's Way. This is a dark grey rock of some sort, or what looks like rock or metal of some kind, that stretches far to the north and a bit easternly. Travel along the Ancient's Way is extremely quick, and within three hours you are at the road's end, on the NE side of Cedar Valley. You can see a trecharous path above you where the "pass" that allows one to climb out of the valley is. Way up above you, you spot a humanoid in some kind of orange uniform climbing up the pass.

===========================================================
Re: Round 2 by Pierce
-----------------------------------------------------------
Pierce looked at the orange clad figure. "That's probably the guy we're after. Let's see if we can catch him quickly."

===========================================================
Re: Round 2 by Xavier Ashe
-----------------------------------------------------------
Are the path and the humanoid about in the same spot?  I'm trying to visualize where everyone and everything are in relation to each other.

===========================================================
Re: Round 2 by Gama Master (GM)
-----------------------------------------------------------
The humanoid is above you several hundred feet, climbing the steep pass which leads out of the valley. The road ends here, dead ending into the valley's steep cliff wall. The "pass" is basically a set of steep carved steps leading out of the valley. The horses might possibly climb the pass without riders, but it would be difficult to get them up it and slow going. Even regular people will be slow climbing with the potential to fall down. Naturally, using ropes would help.

===========================================================
Re: Round 2 by Redmond Jacoby
-----------------------------------------------------------
Redmond sighs. "We'd better get moving, then. Who's got rope?"

===========================================================
Re: Round 2 by Pierce
-----------------------------------------------------------
Pierce checked his saddlebags. The rope that he'd gotten before they went out to face the buggems was still there. "Here. I've got some roope. Let's get moving. We can either come back and get the horses later, or just let Sarge pick 'em up."

===========================================================
Re: Round 2 by Xavier Ashe
-----------------------------------------------------------
X says, "Let's leave the horses.  I've got no rope, but two strong legs."  He begins to climb quickly, trying to catch up to the man in orange.
