Solomon looked relieved as they encountered the others and his eyebrows lifted in surprise at the additions to the group.  He whispered to them, "We got separated by the cave-in and came in through the mound in an effort to make sure that you found a way out.  We found the kids and it looks like you found a bunch of people.  Let's get them out and then decide what to do from there, agreed?"

Solomon gave Redmond a look that said that maybe things weren't quite "excellent" but that they'd explain later.  "The way we came in should be clear, but stay ready just in case.  There were a few side passages and the tunnels could have filled up behind us for all we know."

As the group headed back towards the exit in the mound, Solomon dropped back a bit to speak with the former prisoners.  "Anyone know any of the tactics or powers of these creatures that we should know about?"

Solomon nodded.  Turning back to the man, "I know that you've all been through a horrible ordeal.  Once we get you out, head for the village.  They will likely want to prepare in case we aren't successful here.  There are a couple of children, Bobby and Carrie Bernard I think, that we've already sent off to town.  Is there anyone else we should be looking for down here?  Are any of you missing?"

Solomon glanced at Apollo.  He'd been thinking a similar thought earlier and saw the resemblence to a story told in Greek Mythology about a man named Hercules.  He'd diverted a river to clean out a stable as one of several seemingly impossible tasks.  Apollo had the name of a Greek god, making Solomon wonder if he was familiar with the fable.

"These creatures could burrow away from any fire, though smoke might be effective. Unfortunately, it might drive them out in mass numbers where we couldn't use the tunnels to our advantage.  Water could be very effective.  Anyone have any ideas about how to put enough water in here quick enough to flood the place? He looked at Apollo.

Solomon glanced at Pierce as they continued down the tunnel, "All the equipment we need is sitting in fields and barns all around here.  These farmers have been moving water to irrigate their fields for years.  And I'd be willing to bet they'd  be more than willing to do the work of redirecting it here in order to get their farms back.  We've got the equipment and the work force.  The question is, can we do it in time?"

Solomon glanced at Kari, "Or lots of little ones.  Like say, irrigation aqueducts?"

(OOC: I hate to say it, but there's not much point in continuing the speculation of flooding the mound until we've heard from the GM about nearby water sources.  We might be wasting a lot of breath...and typing.  I just figure, we've got characters with mechanical skills for a reason.  We could feasibly make it happen.  There would still likely be plenty of fighting as ants try to evacuate and when it finally drains, we'd have to check it out.  And we wouldn't want to do it anyway until the GM can answer for the farmers to make sure there aren't any more down there.  We've asked twice IC so far, both Solomon and X.)

There is a man and a woman that exclaim happiness when you tell them about the two children. They identify themselves as the Bernards. The man that spoke up earlier says, "No one else that we know of is in the tunnels."

The river is about half a mile away from the farm. There are probably some smaller streams a bit closer, to irrigate the fields. You think that you could probably divert one into the mound if you took out one side of the mound (you can't make the water go uphill). It would probably take a lot of men many hours to do all of this.

Solomon shook his head.  "I wouldn't give up so easy Pierce.  It might take a while, but it's not impossible.  We've got the manpower here," he said, gesturing towards the farmers.  "They'll need a good meal before they get started.  But it'll take us a while down here anyhow.  We can't just hope that the water will get the queen.  We'll have to do that the hard way.  In addition, we crossed a hole back there that seemed to go down to the water table or an underground stream.  We'd have to collapse that first anyhow, or the nest would drain as quick as we filled it.  And there may be others.  But we don't know how many of these creatures are down here.  Could we fight our way through to kill a hundred of them?  How about 500?  A thousand?  If we don't make it out, who'll stop them then?  I'm not saying we should do it.  I'm saying that the farmers should do it."  He looked around at the others.

You make it to the mound, there is the rope and the spikes. The men and women try to climb out. One woman falls about 15 feet and breaks her ankle. But the rest make it up. With some help, you get the woman with the broken ankle up out also. I'm assuming you all climb out also.

Solomon shrugged his shoulders as he considered it.  "Good point.  The militia would certainly be helpful here.  Okay, so how about this then, we send the farmers to the village.  One of them rides a horse ahead to notify the Sarge and mobilize the militia, while the rest of us stay here and keep an eye on the mound and the area.  That way we can try to keep them pinned down and pinned in in case they try to evacuate or migrate.  Once the militia gets here, we'll figure it out from there.  Sarge may have some ideas."

Solomon shook his head, "I healed her ankle.  It shouldn't be giving her any trouble.  If she needs to, she can always be the one that rides back to mobilize the militia.  That way we have at least enough horses to retreat quickly if we need to, with only one of us riding double.  We'll probably need as many of us here as we can keep in case they try to get out en masse.  Assuming that they don't just burrow out somewhere else that is. With any luck, the militia will be here before nightfall."

Frankly, Solomon was afraid that in the time it took for the militia to get there, the buggems might have gotten the queen out.  But the others hadn't wanted to go back in.  So he held his peace.

As you are talking, you hear a strange noise. It sounds like a roar, but not of an animal. Suddenly from over the trees you see a gaint bird-like thing which roars past you in the direction of the village. There is a man in the thing. It might be an airplane, which you've heard about but have never seen before. The machine flies pretty low to the ground, about tree-top level. It flies off toward town.

Solomon's eyes tracked the thing across the sky.  Suddenly, he was intensely curious as to what the machine was.  To be able to fly across the sky like that would be incredible.

Once the machine had gone, he looked around at the others and finally back to the farmers.  "Alright people," he said, "this place isn't safe right now.  You'll need to move to the village.  And don't stop at your farms to pick up anything.  Just move quickly.  We'll need one of you with good horseman skills to take a horse back and carry a message to the sarge.  Who's it gonna be?"

Looking over at his friends, he asked, "Pepsi, Redmond, do you guys want to scout around and see if there are other entrances to this place?"

Turning to Redmond, he answered, "I guess I can go with you, but I'm not a tracker.  I figured the tracks could lead you to holes.  But Pepsi's going to town and we wouldn't want anyone wandering around out there alone with all these bugs around."

Turning to his friends, Solomon asked, "Can anyone else track?"

Khari can't help thinking about the strange flying machine.  But as much as he'd like to go back to the village to investigate, he knows it's best if he heads back into the holes to try and neutralize the queen.  They can't give the bugs too much time to regroup.

"Guess I'll go back inna holes with you guys.  but we 'ight wanna draw up a ch-chart fer t' Sarge, based on what we all kn-know."

He picks up a stick, and draws from memory what he has seen of the tunnels, and the relative positions to the two tunnel complex entrances.

Pepsi memorizes Khari's diagram, and it does seem to fit with what he remembered of the tunnels. He then mounted one of the remaining horses.

Solomon nodded.  He wanted to go back into the hole again to try and find the queen.  It needed to be done.  But he was so weakened from all the healing that he didn't have much energy left.  "Redmond, if we're going back into the hole, we might need your help inside.  If Skeeter and boy are looking for holes, we'll need a tracker in there.  It's up to you of course."

The farmers start heading back toward town, it will take them several hours and they will be travelling after dark, but one of them said he could find it no problem.

The flying machine seems to circle around the town a few times, and then it begins to head back north. It flies for a while, but then you hear it making stuttering noises instead of its normal consistant roar, and you hear a scream and the sound of crashing branches some good ways off to the northwest.

X seemed to watch nervously as the flying thing went overhead.  He watches and listens to it, intent on something and ignoring the others for the moment.  Then he snaps at the others, "The time for going in the hive is over.  Let Sarge and the town handle them.  We have to check out that flyer.  I'm going to check on it too."
[Private to GM: X is staring intently, very nervous that the Entropic Brotherhood is tracking him down.  He looks for any signs that the flyer belongs to the Brotherhood and is intent on making sure there are no "Brotherhood" witnesses (if that's what it turns out to be).  He will not be easily dissuaded from investigating the flyer.]

Pierce's curiosity won out. This strange craft came from the north, could that be coincidence? He wished that Edgar had been able to tell him more, that might have given him a clue as to what to expect.

[Private to GM: Take 10 on Hide and Move Silently.  Going to keep one hand free to touch to ground to check for vibration..  Going to move and then find a good hidey place.  Sit for awhile and oberserve, then move again.
My time frame is hours and into the night.  Alone if needs be.   But two are better than one, look around and see how is sticking it out and not letting ADHD take over : Oooo, shiny new thing.
